(stopping stone). Placed along a garden path, the stone does not physically prevent visitors from proceeding. Instead, it quietly suggests that “here is enough” and that there is no need to go any further. For me, the tome-ishi is not merely a symbol of boundary, but a shift in perception. Rather than directing where one should go, it invites one to pause and become aware of what is already present, subtly maintaining the order of the surrounding space. +0000 chunauyeung https://chunauyeung.com/2025 An Ongoing Rehearsal within a Labyrinth Copper Leg Art Residency, Estonia In 2022, after completing my Master’s degree in Estonia, I moved directly to a city in the UK. The decision felt somewhat abrupt, and in many ways, unchosen. I remember spending a long time before my arrival navigating the area through Google Maps—surveying streets, buildings, and environments. In this state of “pre-arrival orientation,” I began forming mental images of a place I had never physically entered, generating a tension between imagined stability and geographic positioning. This experience became the starting point of my practice. A map seems to promise direction, offering a pathway to a place called “home”—an endpoint where anxiety might find rest. Yet, once I began living in this so-called destination, I felt only a deep sense of dislocation and despair. It was as if I were holding a map that failed to lead me to any space where I could actually belong. The destination had never truly existed—only the illusion of it. This exhibition traces what I now describe as “an ongoing rehearsal within a labyrinth.” It reflects the gap between the imagined clarity of a destination and the dissonance of actual living. When symbols and shaded zones on a map can no longer guide us to where we hoped to arrive, we are left circling inside abstract signs—hovering in a state of unresolved, drifting, uncertain being. I became, in this process, an uninhabited shell—something moved, but not filled. During my two-month residency at Copper Leg, I return to several recurring questions: What is the fiction of direction? What does it mean for existence to drift? And how much of belonging is shaped by chance? Does the idea of a “destination” truly exist, or is it merely a projection formed by perception? In the exhibition space, I reconfigure familiar objects into misaligned or dysfunctional structures, attempting to give form to a quiet resistance—a questioning of whether existence possesses direction at all. Through experimental approaches, I explore the poetic potential of materials—transforming objects that once served clear functions into symbols of instability. These disruptions are not acts of destruction, but gestures of disorientation—revealing how we perceive and make sense of place. I was sitting on the couch, covering myself with a blanket and listening to a song. The lyrics kept lingering in my head…”that’s me in the corner, that’s me in the spotlight, losing my religion…” That night, I was not the only one in the spotlight. Suddenly, I heard a big bang noise that came from the corner. It was so dark in the room, all I could see was all of my jackets falling off on the ground. At that moment, I was thinking about someone…’ You've Been In My Mind arises from the innermost state of discrete moments to explore the tension between hope and fear, and to translate into art how the two feelings fall together, are voiced and formed. Chun creates meditative drawings and installations based on his personal experience from a living place, presenting it as an intimate but also alienating situation through fusing together the household objects and elements. The new series of works in the exhibition develops and enlarges feelings and lived situations from Chun’s own experiences, mostly influenced by his current displacement from his original homeland. ‘I am bearing my soul, seeking hidden signs of hope and meaning, but the process is holding me back, somehow it makes me feel fear.’ Chun said. Hellos, Goodbyes (2023), is a work transformed from a cloth hanger stand. By removing all the original hanging hooks, Chun subtly attached an archery onto the wall that next to the cloth hanger stand, as if it was shooting by someone from somewhere, vaguely hinting towards something reminiscent of the archery target, revealing a wounded and destroyed relationship. In You've Been In My Mind, Chun continues his exploration of the relationship between domestic elements and human nature, combined with both personal and collective emotions. Specific furniture becomes the medium that allows the artist to construct the complicated feelings of daily experiences, where each object opens a dialogue, which can be both decadent and hopeful at I realised I am not that strong, at some point I felt so vulnerable when people came and went, and it became a usual thing in my life. Somehow it’s just hurting me so much, like an arrow through my heart. It’s been a very long time I haven’t use colour pencils for drawing. It reminds me of my childhood. I draw so hard on the paper and I even start to scratch it, but it turns out the colour was still not really clear on the surface. Some certain parts of the objects I no longer remember the details of. The train journey is a catalyst which tests what kind of chemistry can be created in unstable and uncertain conditions. From the perspective of a passenger, everything in the world is in motion, while from the perspective of someone not on the train it is quite the opposite. Baltic Express reflects on these two phenomena and focuses on a pivotal moment in time. Every story we tell or read about home or about our recent history, now has a different landscape looking out of the window of this train. Emotional security, a significant feeling that has lingered in my mind, became the core element in defining a home for myself. The installation draws inspiration from the philosophy of Tai Chi and is divided into Yin and Yang, presented across three different exhibition spaces. Memories Just Won’t Die, It’s The Trip That Keep Us Alive ARS&nbsp;Kunstilinnak, EstoniaThe title of the work, Our Memories Just Won’t Die, It’s the Trip That Keeps Us Alive, reflects my feelings about memories with the people I loved in the past. By disassembling the physical structure of the chairs and reassembling their parts into a frame, I show the process of transforming an external object into an internal feeling—a physical and tangible household object turned into intangible emotion and memory. I removed one leg from each chair and created a frame to hold the fabric I had taken from them. I then detached the floral and leaf patterns from the fabric, following the colorful threads one by one, color by color. As I removed the pattern, the fabric’s surface was no longer complete, creating a sense that something was absent or missing. In the end, the image faded. The exhibition primarily features a video installation that I created during my isolation in my bedroom. starting point of the group exhibition Wet Hearts of Everyday Thoughts is, on the one hand, environmentally conscious gratitude for bodies of water as diverse habitats. On the other hand, the initial impulse of the exhibition is the posthumanist understanding of humans as aqueous beings whose life is dependent on water from birth to death. The exhibition brings together five artists whose works are linked by a common image—all of the works use a certain body of water or other liquid, in order to refer to personal thoughts and feelings related to various aspects of self-care, such as coping with emotional difficulties, pleasures, everyday rituals, and the embodied experience. Pearls are formed when a foreign object becomes trapped inside an oyster. In order to protect its vulnerable body, the oyster gradually secretes thousands of thin layers of nacre around the irritant, slowly enclosing the source of pain. Over time, what once caused discomfort is transformed into something luminous and precious. I am drawn to this transformation of injury into beauty. By shaping mother-of-pearl into the form of a bandage, the work reflects on the emotional voids and unease embedded in childhood memory, while also suggesting a slow and intimate process of healing. Through sculpture, installation, drawing, and found objects, I explore states of being that are continuously constructed through our relationship with materials, space, the body, and time.&nbsp; About JUNNY CHUN AU-YEUNG (b. 1991) is a Hong Kong-born artist currently based in Coventry, the United Kingdom. He graduated from Estonian Academy of Arts with a&nbsp;Master’s degree in Contemporary Arts in 2022. Working across sculpture, installation, photography, drawing, and moving image, his practice explores the relationship between belonging, temporality, and states of existence. Through everyday objects, bodily gestures, and spatial interventions, he investigates how individuals locate themselves within the uncertainty. His earlier works emerged from experiences of migration and questions surrounding the notion of home. Using fragmented furniture, symbols, and dysfunctional objects, he examined how people navigate unfamiliar environments and search for orientation. In recent years, his focus has gradually shifted from geographical belonging to temporal belonging, exploring things that feel familiar yet remain unreachable—including places, memories, imagined futures, and former versions of the self. His works often inhabit states of suspension, repetition, and incompletion. Through fragmented objects, dysfunctional structures, and everyday materials situated between utility and obsolescence, he seeks to materialise psychological experiences that are difficult to articulate, reflecting on how one understands oneself and one’s relationship to the surrounding world in the absence of clear direction. For Junny, making art is an ongoing process of dialogue with himself. Recurring traces, doubles, and unfinished gestures appear throughout his work as both temporal counterparts and companions generated through prolonged encounters with solitude. Rather than seeking answers, his practice dwells within a transitional space constructed by consciousness itself. Situated between familiarity and estrangement, movement and stagnation, past and future, his work continues to explore how one might coexist with oneself in a condition where return is impossible and arrival remains out of reach.
